Wildlife and Fisheries Biology (WFB) Certification Program

Careers in the wildlife and fisheries profession require specialized knowledge; many agencies require either a major of specific number of course credit hours in wildlife and fisheries as a prerequisite for professional employment. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) requires for all entry-level professional positions (Wildlife Manager I and Wildlife Manager I) that candidates have worked full time for one year as a Wildlife Manager I with the state of Tennessee, or graduated “from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife or Fisheries Management, Wildlife Biology, of other related acceptable field. Related acceptable fields include: General Biology, Zoology, Forestry, Ecology, Vertebrate Biology or Vertebrate Zoology, Agriculture, Agricultural Science or Animal Science; provided the applicant has an additional twenty semester hours of Wildlife related coursework” (TWRA Human Resources). This certificate program is intended for students in programs other than the Wildlife and Fisheries Biology Concentration or who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in an eligible field who wish to maintain eligibility for employment with TWRA and other wildlife agencies with similar professional requirements.

Requirements


Certification of WFB Completion will be issued to students who satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Complete the following two courses with final grades of C or higher:
    a.  WBIO 240  
    b.  WBIO 250  
  2. Complete five of the following courses with final grades of C or higher:
    a.  WBIO 300   
    b.  WBIO 311  
    c.  WBIO 312   
    d.  WBIO 330   
    e.  WBIO 340   
    f.   WBIO 401 -WBIO 402   
    g.  WBIO 420   
    h.  WBIO 441   
    i.   WBIO 450   
  3. Achieve a minimum combined Grade Point Average of 3 or higher for all courses taken above.
