Careers in the wildlife and fisheries profession require specialized knowledge; many agencies require either a major of specific number of course credit hours in wildlife and fisheries as a prerequisite for professional employment. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) requires for all entry-level professional positions (Wildlife Manager I and Wildlife Manager I) that candidates have worked full time for one year as a Wildlife Manager I with the state of Tennessee, or graduated “from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife or Fisheries Management, Wildlife Biology, of other related acceptable field. Related acceptable fields include: General Biology, Zoology, Forestry, Ecology, Vertebrate Biology or Vertebrate Zoology, Agriculture, Agricultural Science or Animal Science; provided the applicant has an additional twenty semester hours of Wildlife related coursework” (TWRA Human Resources). This certificate program is intended for students in programs other than the Wildlife and Fisheries Biology Concentration or who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in an eligible field who wish to maintain eligibility for employment with TWRA and other wildlife agencies with similar professional requirements.
