Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Major in Chemistry (6310)
The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Tennessee at Martin has a three-fold mission in teaching Chemistry: first, to provide basic instruction to all students at the university in the concepts and methods of this central experimental science within the framework of a traditional liberal education designed to prepare the individual for productive citizenship in the modern world; second, to provide further instruction in basic science as a foundation for those students wishing to pursue professional studies in medicine and the related health sciences; and, third, to provide broadly based opportunities for advanced training for students who wish to pursue careers in chemistry or related professions either upon completion of a bachelor’s degree or following additional advanced study. Faculty are committed to mentoring students and to advancing the professions of chemistry and education through a full range of scholarly activities and service to both the campus and community.
The Department of Chemistry and Physics offers two Bachelor of Science degrees. The B.S. with a major in Chemistry (6310) has five concentrations: Chemical Sciences (6311), Pharmaceutical 3 + 1 (6312), Chemical Physics (6313), Health Sciences (6314), and Forensic Science (6315). The traditional Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in a second area (biology, mathematics, physics, geosciences, psychology, etc.) provides an excellent background for students planning careers in medicine or one of the other health sciences, in the emerging field of environmental sciences, or in virtually any technically based area. The Bachelor of Science degree certified by the American Chemical Society (6320) has four concentration options, analytical, biochemistry, organic, and computational. Students pursuing any concentration are required to complete general education requirements and the appropriate B.S. requirements.

Pharmacy 3+1 Concentration (6312)
This concentration is restricted to students pursuing a 3+1 program in pharmacy at an approved college of pharmacy with which UT Martin maintains an articulation agreement. Please consult with an advisor or the pre-health science coordinator for a current list of participating pharmacy programs.
Students who have been accepted for early admission into an approved doctoral program in pharmacy are eligible to pursue the Health Sciences concentration. The 3+1 program is a degree path designed to combine three years of undergraduate course work-including all general education requirements, required course work for the major, and pharmacy school prerequisites with one year of pharmacy school. Bachelor of Science Requirements
Guidance for choosing courses to meet general education and B.S. requirements:
The following courses satisfy general education requirements, are pre-requisites and co-requisites to the chemistry program and/or chemistry courses for the degree: BIOL 130 (4), BIOL 140 (4), CHEM 102 (4)/CHEM 121 (4), CHEM 122 (4), CHEM 201 (4), CHEM 202 (4), PHYS 111 (4), PHYS 112 (4), PHYS 220 (4), PHYS 221 (4), MATH 110 (4)/MATH 140 (3), and MATH 251 (4).
Where an honors course exists equivalent to any course listed above, that honors course will automatically substitute for the listed course. A student may use any combination of honors and regular versions of the respective courses in a given sequence.
Major in Chemistry with a Pharmacy 3+1 Concentration (71 credit hours)
Program-Specific Degree Requirements
- A student must earn a minimum grade of C in every course in the major.
- BIOL 130, BIOL 140, CHEM 121, CHEM 122 are prerequisites to upper division courses needed for this degree. The department recommends that a student uses these courses to satisfy the university-wide general education and Bachelor of Science requirements. A grade of C or better in these courses is required to fulfill prerequisites.

The following courses are required for the Pharmacy 3+1 concentration, are prerequisites to upper division courses needed for this degree, and may also be used to satisfy 16 hours of General Education and Bachelor of Science requirements (as recommended above). If a student does not take these recommended courses to satisfy the General Education and Bachelor of Science requirements, he/she may need to complete additional credit hours to complete the degree:

Pharmacy School Requirements (30 Credit Hours)
To fulfill the pharmacy school requirement, a student will:
- Submit a letter to the Pre-Professional Coordinator upon acceptance into an approved pharmacy school doctoral program stating his or her intent to complete the Health Sciences concentration.
- Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 hours of pharmacy course work in the first year of pharmacy school with a minimum grade of C.
- Request a transcript of the completed pharmacy course work to be sent to the Office of the Registrar. Course work will be reviewed and applied to the student’s record thereafter.
Note: Students who wish to complete a traditional four-year B.S. degree prior to entering pharmacy school should pursue a Chemical Sciences concentration (see above). Students in the Health Sciences concentration must meet all eligibility and residency requirements in their catalog of record. Participation in the 3+1 program does not ensure admission to pharmacy school. Students who do not gain admission to pharmacy school after three years still have the option to complete a major in four years by completing the required courses for the Chemical Sciences concentration (with a suggested minor in Biology)

A minor for this B.S. concentration is optional.

Complete elective hours to achieve 120 credit hours and achieve at least 42 credit hours of upper-division coursework. Elective hours include needed for employment, professional, or graduate school.

Students should check course descriptions for prerequisites before planning to take a course. Some courses included as options may have prerequisites that do not satisfy the concentration.

Most upper-division chemistry courses are not offered every semester, and some are only offered every other year. Students should work closely with a chemistry advisor to plan when they will take courses.
