Agriculture: Agricultural Science - Professional Education Concentration (1113), B.S. Ag.


Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.S.Ag.) - Major in General Agriculture


This agricultural science professional education concentration is offered in cooperation with the College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences and graduates meet certification requirements to teach middle and/or high school agricultural education courses in Tennessee public and private schools. The concentration is designed especially to prepare students as professional agricultural educators in school-based agricultural education and extension programs. Graduates are prepared to assume leadership roles in other segments of the agricultural industry related to public relations, sales, communication, manufacturing, and government service. It is possible to obtain add-on endorsements in the secondary education (7-12) areas such as biology and chemistry. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS


  

  • 120 credit hours are required 
  • Minimum 30 credit hours completed at The University of Tennessee at Martin 
  • 30 credits in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499) 
  • Minimum 60 credits earned at an accredited four-year institution required. 
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required. 
  • A minimum institutional GPA of 2.0 is required. 
  • Must meet all General Education Requirements 
  • Must meet all Major Requirements 
  • Must meet all Exit Exam Requirements 
    • General Education Exam 
    • Major Field Test / Exit Exam 
  • If a student is admitted to the University of Tennessee at Martin with documented entrance deficiencies OR is subject to mandatory placement requirements, then the student must meet those requirements.

Note to students: Some degree programs include required courses for the major that are also options within the University-Wide General Education Requirements. If a student completes a course that simultaneously satisfies both a requirement for the major and a requirement for the University-Wide General Education Requirements, then the student may need to complete additional elective coursework in order to meet the minimum number of credit hours required for the degree. 

Concentration-Specific Course Requirements (82 credit hours)


The Agricultural Science-Professional Education concentration courses provide a diverse curriculum for future educators. Students choose and complete agriculture and related content courses in focus areas aligned with the Tennessee Department of Education Programs of Study commonly offered in school-based agriculture education programs. Students complete teacher education and agricultural education focus areas to develop pedagogical skills necessary for formal and non-formal education occupations. The focus areas and required hours are as follows:

Other Concentration-Specific Requirements


  • Acceptance into the Educator Preparation Program for specific upper division courses. 
  • Successful completion of capstone student teaching experiences during final semester of enrollment. 
  • Passage of any state-mandated licensure exams to obtain a Tennessee teaching license.
