Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.M.) - Major in Music (2730)
The Bachelor of Arts in Music is designed for students who wish to study music as the central part of a broader education. The degree provides significant musicianship and performance components, balanced with a Supporting Elective Plan designed by the student and their advisor. Students may choose either the Band option, the Piano option, or the Voice option within the B.A.M.
Students interested in a music major may choose between the degrees Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in music education, Bachelor of Music in music performance, and Bachelor of Music in music performance-pedagogy.
Expected Outcomes
Music majors will be able to:
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding of musical components and processes.
- create, interpret, compose, present, analyze and evaluate music.
- understand various musical cultures and historical periods.
- integrate musical knowledge and skills.
- demonstrate the capability for independent work in music professions.
Students receiving degrees other than the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Arts in Music may not earn more than 30 hours in courses that apply towards the degrees from the Department of Music, that is, courses in the following disciplines: Applied Music (MUAP), Music Education (MUED), Music Ensembles (MUEN), Music (MUS).

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
- 120 credit hours are required
- Minimum 30 credit hours completed at The University of Tennessee at Martin
- 31 credits in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499)
- Minimum 60 credits earned at an accredited four-year institution required.
- A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required.
- A minimum institutional GPA of 2.0 is required.

COURSEWORK REQUIRED FOR THE DEGREE
Guidance for choosing general education courses:
To take MUS 251 and 252 (Music History and Literature I and II), students must complete MUS 113 (Survey of Western Masterpieces and World Music) with a grade of C or better. MUS 113 counts toward the Fine Arts general education requirement, and students are strongly encouraged to utilize this class to fulfill their general education requirement.
Note to students: Some degree programs include required courses for the major that are also options within the University-Wide General Education Requirements. If a student completes a course that simultaneously satisfies both a requirement for the major and a requirement for the University-Wide General Education Requirements, then the student may need to complete additional elective coursework in order to meet the minimum number of credit hours required for the degree.

Program-Specific Degree Requirements
Admission to Degree Programs in Music
Degree programs in Music are open to all students who satisfy the entrance requirements of the University and the Department of Music. Students must audition for all degree programs offered by the Department of Music and for the minor in music. The audition will have one of three results: full admission to the selected program, provisional admission to the selected program, or declined admission to the selected program.
Full Admission: The student has met the criteria defined by the Department of Music faculty and may begin coursework in their desired program of study.
Provisional Admission: The student may begin coursework in the desired degree program, but due to deficiencies the student must re-audition at the end of the first semester of applied study. If supported by the applied teacher, a second semester or provisional admission may be granted. Students who successfully gain admission are still expected to meet the requirements of the Upper Division jury at the end of four semesters of study.
Students who are not fully admitted to the degree after two semesters of provisional admission will be declined admission.
- The student’s applied lesson grade will not be considered as a part of the second audition to gain full admission.
- Provisional admission may be revoked during the course of study before full admission is granted.
Declined Admission: A student may be declined admission to the Music degree program based on the student’s performance ability and preparation. Students who have been declined admission may re-audition, but may not begin coursework in their concentration for which they have auditioned. Students declined admission to Music are eligible to pursue other academic majors at UT Martin.
Prerequisites
Two prerequisites are not included in the degree program:
- To take MUS 251 and 252 (Music History and Literature I and II), students must complete MUS 113 (Survey of Western Masterpieces and World Music) with a grade of C or better. MUS 113 counts toward the Fine Arts general education requirement, and students are strongly encouraged to utilize this class to fulfill their general education requirement.
- To take MUS 131 (Music Theory I), students must either pass the music theory diagnostic exam OR complete MUS 120 (Fundamentals of Music Theory) with a grade of C or better. The diagnostic is offered in the summer before the first semester during orientation (SOAR); more information is available on the music department website.
Enrollment in Upper-Division Music Courses
Students who have not passed the following courses may not enroll in upper-division (300-level and above) MUS, MUAP, and MUED courses without the permission of the department chair and the student’s adviser:
- MUS 113
- MUS 124
- MUS 132
- MUS 102 (if required)
- 2 semesters of private lessons in their major area (MUAP)
- 2 semesters of large ensembles in their major area (MUEN)
- MUS 361 and MUS 362 (Vocal Music Education and Vocal Performance only)
- MUS 361 (Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy only)
Exceptions will be made for:
- Methods courses (MUS 301, 302, 303, and 304)
- Literature and pedagogy courses (MUS 333, 334, 335, 336, 337, 338, 363, 364, 365, 366, and 367)
Transfer Credit
If a student transfers credit in music courses other than ensembles, these courses may be validated by examination. Unsuccessful validation requires the student to take the course at UT Martin.
Inclusion of Music Courses in Non-Music Degree Programs
Students receiving degrees other than the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music may not earn more than 30 hours in courses that apply toward the degrees from the Department of Music, that is, courses in the following disciplines: Applied Music (MUAP), Music Education (MUED), Music Ensembles (MUEN), Music (MUS).

Supporting Elective Plan (33 credits)
Students must develop a Supporting Elective Plan in consultation with their academic advisor. To ensure academic rigor, the Department of Music Curriculum Committee must approve the Supporting Elective Plan and any subsequent changes to it.
The Supporting Elective Plan must be submitted and approved during the second semester of the freshman year; transfer students must submit and receive approval for their Plan in their first semester. If the Plan is not submitted before students are nearly finished with their General Education courses, it may affect their financial aid.
The Plan must include at least 15 hours of upper-division courses. Minors and/or certificates can be included in the Supporting Elective Plan, but General Education courses cannot. Credit hours are limited for the following area:
- MUAP and/or MUED: no more than 4 hours total between the two areas
- MUS: no more than 19 hours

Designation of a Minor
A minor is optional. A music student may declare a minor in a non-music subject area and have the minor listed on the permanent record under the following conditions:
- minors must be officially approved and described in the university catalog. No unofficial minors will be recognized.
- courses taken to satisfy the minor may also be included on the Supporting Elective Plan.
Course Fees & Other Costs
In addition to the costs outlined by the university, students should be aware of the following additional costs within the music department:
- Lessons incur an additional fee; in addition, students will need to purchase music and/or books for their lesson.
- Instrumental students will need to purchase instrument-specific supplies (reeds, valve oil, etc.) and potentially a new instrument or piece of equipment (such as a mouthpiece).
- Students will need to provide their own attire for concerts.
- MUED courses incur an additional per-credit fee.
- Music education students will need to pay for a background check and liability insurance; in addition, they will need to observe teachers at area schools, which means they’ll need to budget for gas money.
- Conducting students will need to purchase a conducting baton.
Performance Attendance
Music majors and minors must attend a minimum number of department-approved performances:
- Music majors must attend 12 or ⅔ (whichever is fewer) of the performances per semester
- Music minors must attend 6 or ⅓ (whichever is fewer) of the performances per semester
Transfer students will receive credit for attendance at twelve (12) recitals for each semester of lessons in their primary applied area that is accepted via transfer credit.
Capstone Project
All music students complete a capstone project:
- Music education either student-teach or complete an internship in teaching.
- Music performance majors perform both a junior and a senior recital.
- Music pedagogy majors perform a senior recital and complete two semesters of supervised lesson instruction.
- B.A.M. students complete an internship and/or senior project.
Accreditation
UT Martin is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM, 11250 Roger Bacon Drive, Suite 21, Reston, VA 20190-5248, telephone 703-437-0700) and all programs in music are nationally accredited by that organization. The degree program in Music Education is also accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Scholarships
Music scholarships are available for students majoring in Music and are awarded by audition on the basis of promising performance and academic success. These generally range from $200 to $3,000 per year and are renewable through the fourth year of study, provided that renewal criteria are met. The Harriet Fulton Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding music major.
Band scholarships are available to any student, regardless of major, who participates in the band program. These scholarships range from $400 to $2,000 per year and are renewable.
Choral scholarships are available to any student, regardless of major, who participates in the choral program. They are approximately $300 to $2,000 per year and are renewable.

Ensembles
Participation in performance ensembles is open to all students, regardless of academic major. Music ensembles include the University Singers, New Pacer Singers, Lyric Opera Theatre, Piano Ensemble, Skyhawk Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, and Concert Jazz Band; in addition, small ensembles are offered each semester.
Student Organizations
The department houses two chapters of national professional music fraternities, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Sigma Alpha lota, which emphasize professionalism, creativity and service in music. A student chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) is active in preparing students to enter the teaching profession in music by participation in state, regional and national conferences.
