In general, majors should work during their freshman and sophomore years toward the completion of the general education requirements and additional requirements toward the Bachelor of Arts and toward completing at least one sophomore-level literature survey sequence.
English Concentration 1 (Literature Emphasis) introduces students to the widest range of literature, with additional attention to writing and language theory. Students who desire to pursue graduate study in literature, who enjoy the study of literature, and who desire teach literature at some level after further graduate study should follow this option. Concentration 1 is often seen as the most traditional approach to the study of English, featuring the development of critical skills and techniques of analysis and problem solving, vital to any educational and workplace environment.
Some recommended minors for English majors include foreign languages, history, philosophy, political science, international studies, mass media and strategic communication, theatre, or one of the other fine arts.
