Geoscience: Earth Science Concentration (1165)

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) / Major in Geoscience


The Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources offers four concentrations (Earth Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geology, Meteorology) leading to the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Geoscience.  One of the goals of the geoscience major is to prepare students for careers in business, government, education, or industry with skillsets in the fields of climatology, environmental management, geographic information systems, geography, geology, and meteorology.  

This concentration is designed for students interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in Geoscience with a concentration in Earth Science.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS


  

  • 120 credit hours are required 
  • Minimum of 30 credit hours completed at The University of Tennessee at Martin 
  • 42 credit hours in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499) 
  • Minimum 60 credits earned at an accredited four-year institution required 
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required 
  • A minimum institutional GPA of 2.0 is required 
  • Must meet all General Education Requirements 
  • Must meet all Major Requirements 
  • A minor is optional for this degree.   
  • Must meet all Exit Exam Requirements 
  • General Education Exam 
  • Major Field Test / Exit Exam 
  • If a student is admitted to the University of Tennessee at Martin with documented entrance deficiencies OR is subject to mandatory placement requirements, then the student must meet those requirements.

COURSEWORK REQUIRED FOR THE DEGREE


  

Note to students: Some degree programs include required courses for the major that are also options within the University-Wide General Education Requirements. If a student completes a course that simultaneously satisfies both a requirement for the major and a requirement for the University-Wide General Education Requirements, then the student may need to complete additional elective coursework in order to meet the minimum number of credit hours required for the degree. 

If GEOS 110, GEOS 120, GEOS 130, or GEOS 140 is used to satisfy general education requirements, then students must choose additional courses from Biological and Physical Systems to satisfy degree requirements in lieu of these courses. 

Bachelor of Science Requirements


  

Where an honors course exists equivalent to any course listed above, that honors course will automatically substitute for the listed course. A student may use any combination of honors and regular versions of the respective courses in a given sequence. 

Major in Geoscience with an Earth Science Concentration (48 credit hours)


Program-Specific Degree Requirements  

  • Maximum of 50 credit hours in any one subject counted toward graduation 
  • Transfer students must earn at least six hours in the major while in residence at The University of Tennessee at Martin. 
  • 42 credit hours in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499) 
  • A minimum grade of C (2.00) must be made in every course offered for the major.

Earth Science Concentration Course Requirements (48 credit hours)


The student must complete at least 48 credit hours from the menu of courses listed below. 

ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES (20 credit hours)


Students must have at least 120 credit hours in order to meet the university degree requirements.   

Students must complete at least 20 hours in addition to what is specified above.  At least 8 of these 20 additional hours must be in the form of upper division coursework.  

A minor, certificate program, and/or additional electives are ways by which this 20 hour requirement can be achieved. Students are encouraged to discuss possible options with their respective advisors. 

 

A minor is optional.
