Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.S.Ag.) - Major in General Agriculture


The Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources offers five degree programs in Agriculture, Agricultural Business, Geosciences, Natural Resources, and Veterinary Science and Technology with multiple concentrations and options within each degree program.   

The agricultural engineering technology curriculum is designed for students seeking careers with industries and organizations utilizing applied engineering technologies. Careers in agricultural engineering technology include: agricultural equipment manufacturers, agricultural/industrial equipment sales and service, fiber processing, food production/processing industries, biofuels production and processing, geospatial technologies and technological fields in government-related careers. The agricultural engineering technology program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. The curriculum is also structured to prepare students for admission to graduate school in agricultural engineering technology, agricultural operations management, agricultural systems management, or agricultural mechanics. Students may choose from two options in this concentration: General or Precision Agriculture Technology. 

This major does not require a minor. Various certificate programs associated with this major are available to students including: Land Surveying and Geomatics Certificate and Geographic Information Systems Certification. 

General Agricultural Engineering Technology Option: This option provides electives to allow a student to focus on a specific area of knowledge. 

Precision Agriculture Technology Option: Within this option, courses are outlined to provide more experience in the crop and soil sciences and geographic information systems. These two study areas complement the understanding of precision agriculture and how it relates to technology in agriculture.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS


  

  • 120 credit hours are required 
  • Minimum of 30 credit hours completed at The University of Tennessee at Martin 
  • 30 credit hours in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499) 
  • Minimum 60 credits earned at an accredited four-year institution required 
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required 
  • A minimum institutional GPA of 2.0 is required 
  • Must meet all General Education Requirements 
  • Must meet all Major Requirements 
  • If a Minor is required, must meet all Minor Requirements  
  • Must meet all Exit Exam Requirements 
    • General Education Exam 
    • Major Field Test / Exit Exam 
  • If a student is admitted to the University of Tennessee at Martin with documented entrance deficiencies OR is subject to mandatory placement requirements, then the student must meet those requirements.

Guidance for choosing general education courses: 

Some degree programs include required courses for the major that are also options within the University-Wide General Education Requirements. Physics 101, 211, or 220 is required for this concentration. If Physics is taken to satisfy 4 General Education credits, students will be required to choose an additional elective course as specified in the options. 

Program-Specific Degree Requirements


  • This degree is eligible to take ENGL 112 or ENGL 113. 
  • Minimum 30 credit hours in Upper Division coursework (courses numbered 300-499). 
  • A minor is not required. 

Major in Agriculture with an Agricultural Engineering Technology Concentration (82 credit hours)


Agricultural Engineering Technology Course Requirements


Choose 3 hours in Mathematics from:


  • Any general education approved math course not already used to satisfy the General Education requirements for the degree 

Choose 4 hours from: (May also satisfy 4 hours of General Education Requirements.)


Pick one of the following two options (25-29 credit hours):


Option 1: General Agricultural Engineering Technology (1124-GEN)


Soil or Plant Science Elective (3 hours):


  • Choose from any upper division soil or plant science course 

Advisor Approved Electives (16-20 credit hours): (If Physics was taken to satisfy the General Education Requirements, students will complete an additional course(s) in this category.)


  • Choose any advisor approved elective from Agriculture, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Engineering, Food Science, Foreign Language, Geoscience, Mathematics, Natural Resources or Chemistry 

Option 2: Precision Agriculture Technology (1124-PAT)


Precision Agriculture Elective (3-7 hours): (If Physics was taken to satisfy the General Education Requirements, students will complete an additional course(s) in this category.)


  • Choose from any upper division soil or plant science course 

ADDITIONAL NOTES


  1. Field-work involving physical activity is required for some courses in this concentration. 

  2. The following opportunities are available to students in this concentration: 

  • Study abroad or travel study opportunities are available relating to this degree. 
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certification can be obtained by completing 15 hours of GIS courses along with completing a major degree program. 
  • Land Surveying and Geomatics Certificate can be obtained by completing 24 hours of coursework as defined in the catalog for this certificate.
