The Certificate in Music Education in a Secondary Area (Instrumental Music) is intended as structured additional study for music majors seeking development of a skill set outside of their primary area. The certificate program provides rudimentary and advanced preparation in additional instrumental training with the intention of preparing students for teaching or performance outside of their primary area of study. Students will study instrument pedagogy, take private lessons, experience instrumental ensemble performing, gain awareness of appropriate instrumental literature selection, and develop an understanding of related rehearsal techniques specific to the instrumental music genre.
Students who aren’t music majors will be considered by audition and interview; these students must apply for and be approved by the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) before taking MUED 405. Completion of this certificate does not lead to licensure in music education.
