Music, B.M. (2720)


The Bachelor of Music is designed to provide students with the training and knowledge essential for a career teaching at the K-12 level, to attend graduate school, and/or to teach at the collegiate level.  Students interested in a music major may choose between the degrees Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in music education, Bachelor of Music in music performance, and Bachelor of Music in music performance-pedagogy. 

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education K-12 is designed to provide students with the training and knowledge essential for a career teaching at the K-12 level, to attend graduate school, and/or to teach at the collegiate level. Students specialize in instrumental or vocal; a non-licensure concentration is available for the student whose career path changes. 

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education K-12, Non-Licensure is designed to provide students with the training and knowledge essential for a career teaching outside the K-12 setting or to attend graduate school. The non-licensure concentration is generally used for students whose career path changes during the degree. Students specialize in instrumental or vocal. 

The Bachelor of Music in Performance is designed to provide students with the training and knowledge essential for graduate study and a career as a professional performer and/or studio teacher. Students specialize in one of three options: vocal, piano, or band and string instruments. 

The Bachelor of Music in Performance-Pedagogy is designed to provide students with the training and knowledge essential for graduate study, performing professionally, and a career as a studio teacher. Students specialize in one of two options: piano or band and string instruments. 

Expected Outcomes 

Music majors will be able to: 

  1. demonstrate a conceptual understanding of musical components and processes. 
  2. create, interpret, compose, present, analyze and evaluate music. 
  3. understand various musical cultures and historical periods. 
  4. integrate musical knowledge and skills. 
  5. demonstrate the capability for independent work in music professions. 


Students receiving degrees other than the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Arts in Music may not earn more than 30 hours in courses that apply towards the degrees from the Department of Music, that is, courses in the following disciplines: Applied Music (MUAP), Music Education (MUED), Music Ensembles (MUEN), Music (MUS).
