Geographic Information Systems Option (1164)


Geographic Information Systems in a suite of computer-based software and data that are used to capture, store, manipulate, map, and analyze spatial data. This curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in the diverse and rapidly expanding professional fields that utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Professional areas that utilize GIS include, but are not limited to: advertising, cartography, conservation, environmental and natural resource management, farm management, marketing, meteorology, military intelligence analysis, oil and gas exploration, political campaign management, STEM, transportation management and planning, and urban and regional planning. Students receive instruction in the use and applications off GIS software, the fundamentals of geoscience, and selected disciplines in which GIS is applied. This curriculum is also structured to prepare students for graduate-level studies. Students who complete this option also receive a Certification in GIS from the department.
