Interpretation Certificate Program

According to the National Association for Interpretation, interpretation is a purposeful approach to communication that facilitates meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us. Interpretation represents specialized knowledge within Natural Resources Management. A variety of public and private entities require a knowledge of interpretation for employment. Students wishing to demonstrate a level of competency in interpretation can complete this certificate.

The following courses, offered at The University of Tennessee at Martin, are required for the certificate. A minimum grade of C is required for each course taken for the Interpretation Certificate.

NRM 200 - Natural Resource Interpretation Practicum Credit(s): 3
PARK 200 - Recreation Leadership, Programming, and Interpretation Credit(s): 3
PARK 400 - Advanced Interpretation of Natural and Cultural Resources Credit(s): 3
PARK 430 - Supervised Field Experience Credit(s): 3-12
*To obtain the Interpretation Certificate, the experience must be interpretation related.

Students seeking to use transfer credit from another institution for any of the courses listed should contact the certificate coordinator. No more than 6 hours of transfer credit may be applied to this certificate.
