Cell and Molecular Biology: Medical Laboratory Science Concentration (6234), B.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs (A-Z)

Concentration in Medical Laboratory Science (6234). This concentration is restricted to students pursuing a Master of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Advanced Practice Track (CLS) with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The 3+1 program is a degree path designed to combine three years of undergraduate course work at UT Martin (a minimum of 92 credit hours)-including all Bachelor of Science degree requirements (minimum 55 credit hours), required course work for the major (detailed below) and CLS prerequisites-with one year of specialized undergraduate Medical Technology training at UTHSC. If accepted into the CLS program, students transfer to UTHSC for their fourth year.  Upon successful completion of the first year at UTHSC, the students will transfer 30 credit hours back to UT Martin to complete their bachelor’s degree requirements with a major in Cell and Molecular Biology and a concentration in Medical Laboratory Science. Students then continue in the CLS program. The nine-credit hour transfer restriction is waived for students in this cooperative program.

Required Courses

Supporting Courses:

Chemistry                    CHEM 102  or CHEM 121 CHEM 122 , and either CHEM 310  and CHEM 319  or CHEM 341

Physics                         PHYS 211 PHYS 212  or PHYS 220 PHYS 221

Mathematics               MATH 210  and either MATH 160  or MATH 251

Required Biology Courses

Biology                        BIOL 130 BIOL 140 BIOL 331 BIOL 336 BIOL 391 BIOL 410

Microbiology               MBIO 310

Zoology                       ZOOL 251 *, ZOOL 352

Electives                      Three to four credit hours selected from upper-division courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences.

*ZOOL 251 does not count as hours toward the Biology major, but serves as a prerequisite to Zoology 352, and is a required course for the MLS program.

Medical Laboratory Science Requirement (30 hours)

To fulfill the professional program requirement, a student will:

  • Submit a letter to the Health Sciences Pre-Professional Coordinator upon acceptance into the Master of Science Clinical Laboratory Science, Advanced Practice Track stating his or her intent to complete the Medical Laboratory Science concentration.
  • Satisfactorily complete at least 30 credit hours of medical technology course work in the first year of MLS training at UTHSC with a minimum grade of C.
  • Request a transcript of the completed course work to be sent to the Office of the Registrar. Course work will be reviewed and applied to the student’s record thereafter.

Note:  A student in the Medical Laboratory Science concentration must meet all eligibility and residency requirements in his/her catalog of record, and/or as specified or necessitated by the 3+1 articulation agreement. Participation in the 3+1 program does not guarantee admission to the Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, Advanced Practice Track at UTHSC. A student who desires to complete a traditional four-year B.S. degree prior to entering graduate school should pursue one of the standard Biology concentrations.

If the student does not enter the MLS program at UTHSC after three years at UT Martin, he/she may earn a B.S. degree by completing one of the standard concentrations in a Biology major that best meet his/her interests. An academic advisor should be consulted for more information and assistance.
